Instructions Before SedationYou have been scheduled to receive dental treatment under sedation. The medications that will be administered will allow you to undergo treatment in a relaxed and comfortable state. The following recommendations must be followed: - No Solid foods or non-clear liquids (milk, orange juice, coffee with cream, etc.) should be consumed after midnight or 8 hours before your appointment. However, you may drink a small amount of clear liquids (apple juice, clear broth, water, etc.) up to 2-3 hours prior to your appointment. IF YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT AFTER 2:00PM, please have a full meal and drink plenty of water BEFORE 7:30am. - Take all prescription medications as normal unless the doctor instructs you otherwise. - Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves and flat shoes. - Please remove any nail polish or acrylic nails. - If you are having implant surgery or a bone graft, please do not wear any make-up. - Since you may be drowsy following treatment, a responsible adult must escort you home. Changes in your health or questions concerning these recommendations before your appointment should be directed to Dr. Amin. Your comfort, convenience and safety are our primary concerns. Please follow these instructions to help us achieve our goals. Dental Implant Surgery Post-Operative Instructions1. Apply an ICE pack to the outside of the face over the surgical site to reduce swelling (normal after an oral surgery procedure). Leave the ice pack on for 20 minutes EACH hour until bedtime regardless of the lack of surgical swelling or pain. This procedure should be repeated up to 24 hours to help reduce swelling, pain, and bleeding.2. Keep your HEAD ELEVATED when resting and sleeping for the first day. This will reduce both bleeding and swelling and is extremely important. 3. Bite with firm, steady pressure on the gauze given to you by the office for 30 - 45 minutes. Dampen with water then bite for 30 continuous minutes. Replace if necessary for the first few hours after surgery. Bleeding following surgery is normal. If profuse bleeding occurs after three or four hours, elevate your head and bite with firm, steady pressure on damp gauze or a moist tea bag (must be caffeinated) for 30 minutes. If this does not slow down the bleeding, call the office. Take all medications prescribed by this office. 4. STARTING TOMORROW gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water three times a day each time for 30 seconds. Dissolve one-half teaspoon in an 8-ounce glass of warm water-continue for seven days. If you have been prescribed a special dental rinse (chlorhexidine), use this instead of salt water for seven days. 5. DO NOT USE A STRAW – Sucking may cause loss of blood clot, or opening of the sinus. 6. You may eat and drink. If you have had a routine extraction or implant surgery, it is important that you eat solid food as comfort will allow, although you should avoid sharp crunchy foods for several days. 7. DO NOT SMOKE – Smoking will increase the time it takes for you to heal, and greatly increases the risk of a dry socket or implant or bone graft failure. 8. Normal tooth brushing is permitted – be gentle in the surgical area. 9. If you are concerned about any event or symptom following your surgery, please call promptly. A call will often avoid more serious complications. Do not call your physician, he or she is not acquainted with the events that brought about the situation. 10. We will discuss how to use and care for any temporary teeth that you may have. Sedation Post-Operative InstructionsAll patients who have received anesthesia for their dental procedure are urged to follow these guidelines in order to promote a prompt and uneventful recovery. The majority of complaints after anesthesia care are preventable by following these instructions. Your cooperation will assist in making your personal anesthesia experience a more pleasant event.Progress from clear liquids to soups to solid foods, increasing your diet throughout the day. When you become hungry, please start with small amount of food to see how you feel. As you feel better, remember to drink plenty of liquids. Avoid starting out with dairy products. It is very important to minimize your physical activity for the remainder of the day. You have received strong medications during your procedure and will probably be taking additional prescription medications as directed by the office. Avoid rapid changes in position and avoid climbing stairs alone today. Please resume any prescribed medication schedule immediately. Avoid over the counter medications, unless otherwise directed by your doctors. Please do not drive or operate machinery until the following day. No alcoholic beverages. Arrange for help with children or pets. Have a friend or relative get your prescriptions, and stay with you today. Do not make any important decisions today as the effects of amnesia (memory loss) and drowsiness may linger for several hours. The amnesia effect may outlast the effect of the sedatives. |
